10books

I read up a storm during the month of December.  I think it was holiday procrastination or something.  I’ve been trying hard to break out of my “norm” for book choices and I think I’ve done a good job doing that – and really enjoyed some books I wouldn’t normally pick up!

Being in a new book club has helped too since the host picks the book.  I love the diversity of book tastes of everyone.  So if you’re looking to find something different to pick up, check out this list of 10 random books I’ve read and enjoyed recently and I challenge you to pick the one that isn’t like the last book you read!

Screen Shot 2014-01-06 at 11.07.00 AM Wonder – this is such a beautiful book.  The main character is a boy with a severe facial deformity.  The book doesn’t just center around him though – it’s about how he impacts others, how they interact with him and about how to treat your fellow human being.  It’s really a special book and it’s a quick read.

Screen Shot 2014-01-06 at 11.26.03 AM The Legend Trilogy – I loved this set and read them one at a time, Champion (book 3) came out in the fall and I was so happy to have the final installment of the book.  Dystopian fiction.

The Dog Stars – A flu wipes out most of the US population.  This book is about a guy named Hig.  He lives in a small plane abandoned airport hanger with his dog and a random guy named Bangley.  One day he decides to get in his plane and just fly West.  I don’t even want to tell you anything more but what follows is a beautiful story.

What Alice Forgot – Alice Love wakes up on the floor of her gym in a spin class.  She thinks she’s 29 and pregnant with her first child.  Only she finds out that in reality, she is actually 39, she has hit her head and forgotten the last 10 years of her life.  Instead of being pregnant and in love with her husband, she finds out she has 3 kids and is in the middle of a divorce.

The Husband’s Secret – by the same author of What Alice Forgot, this one’s a page turner too!  This was her breakout book that came to the states (the author is Australian) and it’s on the New York Times Bestseller list.

The Fault in Our Stars – about a teenage girl with terminal cancer.  I know that makes you think, heck no, I’m not reading that sob story but it really is a gorgeous story with beautiful characters that make the most out of life. A quick read.

The Interestings – a group of 6 bond at camp as teenagers and name themselves the “Interestings” because they believe they are, interesting and are going to be epic in the future.  The book follows the crew for the next several decades.

The 5th Wave – several waves of disasters have come to the world. Disease and more have killed much of the population and the main character, Cassie, fends for herself out in the woods because you can’t trust everyone – not everyone is “right.”  Read and find out why. Exciting and fast, I can’t wait for book two to come out!

Screen Shot 2014-01-06 at 11.03.13 AM Razorland Series (Book One is Enclave) – You gotta love zombies and sci-fi for this one but I loved this series and am jealous of anyone who hasn’t read it and has all 3 now available to read.  I read each book one at a time and finished the final book in the series, Horde, this fall.  The books are set at some point in the future and there are two types of humans – normal ones trying to survive, and zombie-type beings that they call “the Freaks.”  I won’t tell you guys anything more but the series spans from underground to above and has a lot of action and romance.

Screen Shot 2014-01-06 at 11.29.34 AM 11/22/63 – this was the first time I had picked up a Stephen King book in over 20 years.  What if you had the ability to go back in time and change the course of the future?  One man sets out to stop the JFK assassination.  It’s not just a history lesson but a compelling story with romance and action.  It’s a long one but it’s really epic and I thought it was a great page turner!

  1. Awesome list. You know I read most of these but you’ve got 4 titles that sound awesome and are new to me so I’m totally going to read them. Thanks!

    • Yay! Did you do the Dog Stars yet? Kept meaning to tell you about that one – that’s apocalypse/dystopian too. And some of the non-DF ones are actually really awesome too!
