My son is a huge Thomas the Train fan. I think we have every train there is. (Well, not every one, but close!) We also have most puzzles, card games, board games, and more.
Recently a new Thomas game by Briarpatch was unveiled, called Thomas’ Great Race. In this fun and colorful game, children must learn their numbers to earn coal to power their engines – Thomas, James, Percy or Molly – over the hill and across the finish line. This fast action game encourages the development of sorting, counting and color matching skills.
My 4-year old son loves the game and plays it repeatedly. The game states ages 3+ on the box, but if your child knows his or her colors and basic numbers, I think a 2 year old could also enjoy it with the help of a parent or adult. The game works by players taking turns selecting a card and answering a simple counting question based upon what they see on the card. The answer – ranging from one to three, depending on the card selected — appears on the back of each card. The player then picks up the matching block of coal (1, 2, or 3) and inserts it into the open slot behind his engine, “powering” it up the hill. Once the engines crest the hill, they roll across the finish line.
The game retails for $24.99 but we found it for $20.99 on Amazon!)
