Okay guys. I know there’s a lot out there these days on food subscription boxes, information on buying organic and local. Sometimes it feels a little overwhelming and judgy. I personally try and do the best I can when it comes to feeding my family – buying organic or local when I can but 1) all healthy all the time gets expensive and 2) the food you want isn’t always available.
Recently, I checked out another subscription box, ButcherBox. I’m not a big meat eater so I wasn’t sure how I would feel about this one. I don’t eat beef; so unless my kids and hubby are out somewhere they can order a steak or a cheeseburger, they aren’t eating it either.
But we do eat chicken and pork and I know plenty of you out there are eating beef. ButcherBox is a monthly subscription box with the highest quality 100% grass-fed beef, free range organic chicken and Heritage Breed Pork.
And for you beef eaters – here’s a random fact I was shocked to learn:
Did you know that only 1-3% of the total beef produced in the United States is 100% grass-fed, and is largely inaccessible in many parts of the country? Did you also know that the other 97-99% of cows are raised on feedlots where they spend most of their lives eating out of troughs filled with corn and even skittles?! Yup, skittles.
I don’t know about you guys but that seems pretty insane to me.
Feedlot cattle are fed antibiotics, hormones, corn, soy, and in some cases even animal byproducts and candy. As a result, you get a fatty piece of meat tainted with antibiotics and hormones. This is not healthy. When we eat animals that are not healthy – we become unhealthy.
With ButcherBox, for $129 a month, or a box, you get 8-11 pounds of high-quality meat. It’s enough for 18-25 individual meals at around 6-8 oz per meal. Basically, it’s a good amount of meat even if you have to feed a big family. It may sound like a lot but I think if you take a look at your grocery bill over the course of 4 weeks and add up the price you pay for meats, you’ll find it doesn’t seem so pricey at all.
I got a chicken and pork only box. Everything comes packaged WELL and frozen so I popped everything in my freezer and took things out to defrost as I planned meals. The meats I received lasted 3 weeks in our house and we were eating often.
Here’s a couple of snapshots of some of what I received:
The meats tasted fresh & the cuts were really nice. I was surprised at how pleased I was at the quality. I’m definitely going to do it again. I feel like subscribing to ButcherBox would be a Whole30 or clean-eating person’s dream too.
No two boxes are the same which makes it kind of fun too. If you check out ButcherBox, let me know what you think.
