With some neighbors at the last race I ran - the Turkey Trot 5k on Thanksgiving Day. My best time ever, under 10 min miles! (I'm the one with the Wonder Woman socks!)
A couple of weeks ago, I noticed a conversation going on over on Twitter with a bunch of Fitfluential Ambassadors. They were challenging themselves and the online community to run 13 in 2013.
At first, I thought it meant running a half marathon but when I clicked over, I loved the challenge even more when I realized that wasn’t it – it’s 13 races of your chosing in 2013 (any distance!). I quickly counted up the races I had done in 2012.
I’ve been getting more and more into running and I realized that without trying, I ran 5 races in 2012 – the last four all being in the fall. Four of them were 5ks and I ran one 5 mile race. I’m loving it.
The more I run, the farther I want to go. This also may be my year to run Broad Street – the infamous flat 10-mile race that every person who lives in the Philadelphia region who calls themselves a runner has to do at some point in their lives. I’ve been talking about doing it for years, and last year I seriously considered it but it ended up being the same weekend as my oldest son’s First Communion. So that was out. But this year? No excuses.
It’s a competitive race in terms of getting an entry but this year they are having a lottery system – I am hoping to get an entry.
I’ve never run over 5 miles but I’ve been consisently running 4-5 miles on most runs lately. Hubby also knew I was getting serious and he got me a Garmin Forerunner GPS watch for Xmas so I’m all about how many miles I can go this year.
Joining up with the 13in2013 girls seemed like just the goal for me this year. I think it’s going to be a blast and while I figure the majority of my races will be 5ks, I hope to throw in a few 5 miles as well as Broad Street into the mix.

I just ran my first 5K in November called “Freeze Your Gizzard”..lol! I have been a Field Hockey player through high school, college and even joined an adult league. I never thought I would be a “runner” but I love it. I cannot commit to 13 races but I will shoot for 3 5k’s. Good luck with 13!!:) OH! That Garmin is nice!! I have always wanted one!
Thanks for the comment! I was a field hockey player in high school too and I always ran a little but not as regularly or as much as I have been in the past year. Really hoping to step it up this year and congrats on your first 5k, that sounds so fun! (and cold! LOL)
