This week’s Bump Month topic is the last topic of the month and it is:  What No One Ever Told Me/Wish I Would Have Known.

I’m a firm believer in learning through experience.  Moms will give you all sorts of advice – both wanted and unwanted.  And you’ll hear it all:  use x brand of diapers.  Use this stroller.  Be sure you don’t give your baby apples after 5 pm or evil Gremlins will pop out of their backs! Advice is always flying around and I had heard a lot.

But there’s one thing that I think I didn’t really get before I became a mother.  And I can type about it, and I’m sure some Moms will nod their heads in agreement, but if you’re not a Mom, you won’t get it until you are one.  Words just won’t do it justice.  But here goes because no one communicated this to be before I was a Mom.

Your entire life changes once you’re a mother.  And not in the obvious ways.  You lose a part of yourself.  When you’re young, you’re a child with parents who take care of you.  You grow up and you’re taught to be independent, to explore — it’s all about taking care of yourself.  You can be a good person but ultimately it’s about you and your day and your actions.  You are the center of your universe.  I’m not saying it’s a bad thing and that all these 20-somethings are selfish, it’s just the way it is.

When you become a mother, that gravity shifts.  Within minutes.  Your baby is born and you are no longer the center of your universe – your child is.  You shape things around them, whether it’s intentional or not.

It’s earth-shattering.  But it’s not a bad thing.  You’re no longer on your own. My husband and I, our little planet revolves around the kids’ planets, and they revolve around ours.  But it takes time to adjust to your new found role in the universe and now that it’s okay if it takes you time to get used to the new “you”.

Actually the gravity shift is not minutes. . . more like the’ nanosecond’ you meet your baby. It is truly an indescribable experience. . Well, come to think of it, some words do come to mind:: yes: a humongous adjustment like you say. . . and one that is pretty exiting, scary ,overwhelming , wonderful, miraculous. . . . a love at first sight event.
Instinct takes over: all you want to do is love ,guard, shield and protect this tiny little being- forever. . (well, not so much the 2pm feeding)
No matter how old that tiny little being becomes, Momma’s love never leaves.. . it’s there forever.. The parent’s role of course changes along with the needs of the child, but it is always present. And yes, the offspring do become center of your universe. And that’s a good thing.
