A balance bike gets your child ready for a two wheeler and also teaches balance, coordination and steering. We’re big fans of Prince Lionheart’s balanceBIKE ($84.99), which has rubber hand grips, a 100% birchwood frame, 12 ” rubber tires and a height adjustable, padded seat.
You’ll have to put it together — my husband was able to do it quickly, while being “assisted” by our 3 year old. Suitable for children ages 2-5, this should be used with supervision until your child can handle using it. My son , who has low muscle tone, was able to use it easily after 1 day.
My son loves walking it around our apartment and calls it his motorcycle. It’s really helped him with his coordination and balance (which are somewhat lacking due to his low tone) and has also boosted his self-confidence. This summer we’ll be taking this BalanceBIKE on the open sidewalk (with a bike helmet for our son)– at under 10 lbs, it fits in our car’s trunk easily.
