Truth be told, I should have known it was going to be a scene when I left my house this morning to pick up the Nintendo Switch, which released today, March 3. We hadn’t pre-ordered. I had intended to do it at my local GameStop but by the time I got around to it, they were sold out of their pre-order slots.

I didn’t even think I’d be that person who would wait in line for it but it’s all my boys were talking about this morning. I saw that Target would have some at opening at 8 am so I figured I would swing by. I didn’t expect anyone to be there – really, anyone responsible would have preordered, right?

I pulled up at 7:50 am and of course there was already a line of non-planners like me. But it wasn’t bad – I was #14 and a Target employee informed me that they had 24 units available and only one unit per person was allowed so I was in! The buzz in the line was infectious and we all chatted about our love for Nintendo as we waited for the doors to open. One guy had already been to another local Target and had no luck so he was happy to score a unit at my Target.

It doesn’t come with any games built-in like the old Wii did, and my Target only had 4 games available. Apparently more games will be released this spring but the game choices do seem a little light for a console launch.

I purchased 1-2 Switch and newThe Legend of Zelda game. Zelda was already a given – you don’t wait in line for a new Nintendo console to come out with a new Zelda game and not get that! And the 1-2 Switch sounds like a good family game so I thought we’e check it out. I’m also considering going out again later and seeing if they still have copies of Super Bomberman which is getting good reviews. Other than those, we’ll be watching and waiting for some of the Mario games to release later this spring.

Meanwhile, my boys are going to be so excited when they get off the bus! They are helping to pay for it since we don’t just randomly buy consoles in the middle of March for no reason too. I was hoping they could hold off until Easter but there was no way. Hopefully the Easter bunny will bring them another game or two. (Hey Nintendo – more games pre-Easter would be awesome if you are listening!!!)

I posted on Facebook about waiting in line for the Switch and a few people didn’t know about it.

The Switch is Nintendo’s latest new console and what makes it stand out from the others is that it’s portable. It serves as your gaming console at home but it converts – the remotes literally pop off the console, and it can be an on-the-go tablet, as well as played on your tv.

I’ll report back what we think once we get a few days worth of gaming in with it!
