The 101 Dalmatians Musical is playing for the next week at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Based on the beloved book, life is presented from a dog’s point of view. Set in London in 1957, Dalmatians spouses Pongo and Missis Pongo live with their “pets” Charles and Catherine Dearly. When their 10 puppies are kidnapped by Cruella de Vil, a vast network of dogs help them rescue their pups. The musical, presented by Purina Dog Chow, was directed by Jerry Zacks, the book written by BT McNicholl, and the music was composed by former Styx frontman Dennis DeYoung. The lyrics were written by Dennis DeYoung and BT McNicholl. It starts Sara Gettlefinger as Cruella De Vil.
My children and I attended the 101 Dalmatians Musical performance recently. Before the show, we got to meet DX, one of the canine stars. He was gentle and my two kids enjoyed petting him. We found the show utterly delightful. The scenery was colorful and the story moved quickly. My 4 1/2 year old son was utterly entranced and he and I loved the mix of humans playing dogs and the real dogs that were on the stage. Sara Gettlefinger was terrific as the villianous Cruella. Unfortunately we ended up leaving before the finale, because my 2 year old daughter just couldn’t handle it. I’d recommend the show for ages 3 1/2 and up.
Many of the dogs in the show came from shelters and rescue groups around the country and will be available for adoption in June 2010. Click here for more info.

They all look adorable in those Dalmatian outfits. Here’s hoping that all of those dogs get adopted because of the show.
