Before I met my husband, I had never heard of Keratosis Pilaris. I actually remember pretty well asking him one day, what are all those little red bumps on the back of your arm?
He shrugged and responded he had no clue. He had had them all his life.
Fast forward to having our babies. I ended up at the pediatric dermatologist for my youngest when he had some eczema issues. I remember pointing out some little bumps on his arms too. “His Dad has the same thing,” I commented.
Yep, the dermatologist told me it was a very common condition called Keratosis Pilaris.
From WebMD: Keratosis Pilarisis is a common, harmless skin condition. It causes small, hard bumps that may make your skin feel like sandpaper. The bumps are often light-colored.
What Causes KP?
Keratosis Pilaris results from the buildup of keratin, a hard protein that protects skin from harmful substances and infection. The keratin forms a scaly plug that blocks the opening of the hair follicle. Usually many plugs form, causing patches of rough, bumpy skin. No one knows exactly why keratin builds up, but dry skin tends to worsen the condition.
Of course, sometimes other conditions go hand-in-hand with it. As was the case with my youngest son, who has a lot of eczema issues, especially in the winter.
So I’m always on the hunt for great skincare products and was recently introduced to AmLactin Skin Care – a line of lotions and creams that deal with KP and other treatable skin care conditions.
How Do You Get Rid of KP?
So while there is no cure for KP, alpha-hydroxy containing products, like AmLactin, can help with the dry skin associated with the condition. My interest was definitely piqued. And even though my oldest and I don’t seem to have KP, I still have nasty dry skin in the winter so I’m always up for checking out the latest products.
We tried out four different types of AmLactin lotions. Here they are in a nutshell:
AmLactin Moisturizing Body Lotion: It’s made up of 12% lactic acid, pH-balanced for the skin and boosts the skins natural renewal process through gentle exfoliation and deeply moisturizes. Reveals softer, smoother skin. This one seemed like the all-play that’s good for all kinds of uses.
AmLactin Ultra Hydrating Body Cream:This one has a patented ULTRAPLEX formula that gently exfoliates and is clinically proven to deeply hydrate. Helps smooth rough, dry, bumpy skin including dry skin associated with Keratosis Pilaris (KP).
I really liked the consistency of this one – a lot of times body creams are so thick, it’s hard to really get them on your skin and when you do you feel like you’re pasting cake frosting or something onto your skin and it doesn’t blend well. This wasn’t thick at all and went on very smoothly. (I’m a stickler for this with lotions and creams!) You can see that it’s not too thick from the little bit on my finger here:
AmLactin Cerapeutic Restoring Body Lotion: Alittle heavier duty, I liked that this body lotion was still pretty thin consistency. My 9-year-old likes this one and has taken it for his lotion!
AmLactin Foot Cream: This is just what it says, a formula designed to gently exfoliate and meant for your feet. It helps prevent splits and cracks while smoothing calluses.
