You know it’s a good book when you finish and you’re sad it’s over. I’m still reeling and thinking about Moloka’i, the historical book I finished last night. The book is set in the early 1900s in Hawaii, during one of the largest medical quarantines that ever happened in the US. (leprosy)
The story follows Rachel Kalama, a 7 year old girl who contracts the disease and as a result, is ripped away from her family to move to the island of Moloka’i, where those who test positive for leprosy are secluded from the rest of the world. I won’t tell you all much more but it’s a heavy but engaging and educational read. I loved readingso much about the Hawaiian culture and learning about a time I really knew very little about. If you’re looking for your next read, this is it. You can find Moloka’i on Amazon, your local library or wherever!
Apparently there’s a second book coming out next February but I’m not sure I’ll pick it up – this book ended so perfectly.
